The " Lycee & College ERCKMANN-CHATRIAN " is a state secondary school established by imperial decree on July 8th, 1803. The school is one of the oldest in the north-east provinces of Alsace-Lorraine and, as such, bears many marks of their turbulent history.
Originally the buildings were a Capuchin monastery, which later developed with the ebb and flow of the many French educational reforms.
Today it welcomes 820 students and is staffed by 145 adults. It is surrounded by a pleasant green park, right on the edge of the former military city of Phalsbourg, a town with 4,707 people..
Its academic programs look to the future; through its dynamism the institution is aiming to stay current with the times, while benefiting from and leaving a mark on its economic environment. With this goal in mind, a broad rehabilitation and restructuring program is currently under way.
The school's logo is bordered by a square, a geometric pattern reminding us of Vauban's urban architecture. The " Lycee & College ERCKMANN-CHATRIAN " takes pride in its place within the city walls and reaches out to the world through two military gates called " Porte de France " and " Porte d'Allemagne ".
The Lycee and the College are two limbs of the same body. The conjunction " & " is a symbol of this connection. It links the two famous local novelists Erckmann & Chatrian and, by definition, also symbolizes our mission to build and educate. The colours in the logo bring to mind the earth, nature and the local sandstone.
