Using the internet in the classroom
There are many ways to use the Internet in the classroom, but there are two basic rules that must be respected.
  • Be precise  The net is bursting with documents and hyperlinks.  It is very easy to lose one's way.  Users need to have a clear objective in mind, and for this reason it is preferable to concentrate on the methodological aspects of research before letting a class loose on the web.
  • Complementarity  Using the internet should not replace more traditional methods of teaching, but serve as a source of enrichment.
10 Suggested Activities:
  • Contextual research related to the document being studied in class.  This provides an opportunity to introduce pupils to multitasking (by cutting and pasting into a Word document, for example) and subsequently requires that information is edited.
  • Treasure Hunts - These can be created by the teacher in a quiz form, or see the list at Yahoo which is updated regularly
  • E-Mail contacts with other classes - a fruitful source of exchanges
  • Real time audio and video.  Film trailers, news reports etc.
  • Auto-correction by e-mail.
  • Create your own newspaper.  Combined with a study of online newspaper resources, pupils can go on to write their own on- or off-line organ, using an HTML editor, or in a desktop publisher.
  • Send virtual postcards.  This is an all year round activity.  The students need to follow the step by step instructions.  Many sites offer this service free of charge.  Equally, you can use digitized photos of the school or region in this manner.
  • Prepare a virtual or real trip.  Order the brochures online, visit related sites.
  • HTML production.  The possibilities are endless.  This can be centered around a theme or even a single text.
  • Prepare an oral debate using the Internet as a source of arguments.  This can even be planned as a video-conference.
For more ideas: This list is far from exhaustive.  Web directories will provide many other resources.
