The
aqueduct was more than 22 km long. The underground part was made up of two sections. The
first one ran from Gorze to the basin of Ars and was 12.7 km long. The second one ran from
the basin of Jouy to the castellum divisorium which was probably situated in the area of
today's Hôpital Bon Secours. Its length was estimated at 8.5 km.
The
road from Novéant to Gorze gives a certain idea of what this pipe used to look like. It
is about 1.6 m high and 1.2 m wide. It was built according to a technique called 'petit
appareil'. So as to keep it watertight, the inner side was coated with lime mortar and
crushed bricks. The coating was 6 cm thick on the sides and 8 cm thick on the bottom. It
was high enough for a man to get inside and clean or repair it. Square-shaped openings
with 1.2 m long sides were scattered all along the way to get to the inside of the pipe.
